Question

P, Q, R, S, T, U and V live on seven different floors of the same building. The lowermost floor in the building is numbered 1, the floor above it, number 2 and so on till the topmost floor is numbered 7. Only P lives below U. Only four people live between U and R. T lives on an odd numbered floor immediately above S. Q does not live on even numbered floor. Who lives on floor number 6?

The correct answer is

V

Only P lives below U, so P is on floor 1 and U is on floor 2.

Only four people live between U and R. Counting five floors up from floor 2 gives floor 7 (floors 3, 4, 5 and 6 lie between them); counting down is impossible. So R is on floor 7.

T lives on an odd numbered floor immediately above S. The odd floors still free are 3 and 5 (floor 7 belongs to R). If T were on floor 3, S would be on floor 2, which U already occupies. So T is on floor 5 and S is on floor 4.

The floors left are 3 and 6. Q does not live on an even numbered floor, so Q is on floor 3, and the last person, V, is on floor 6.

Therefore the person living on floor number 6 is V.

Check: only P (floor 1) is below U (floor 2); Q, S, T and V (floors 3 to 6) lie between U and R; T on odd floor 5 is immediately above S on floor 4; Q is on odd floor 3 – every condition holds.

Hence, V.
