Teaching is conventionally described at three levels, arranged from the simplest mental activity to the most complex, and the question asks which option falls outside that scheme.

The memory level is the lowest. Associated with Herbart, it involves presenting facts for the learner to recall. The teacher is highly active, the learner largely passive, and success is measured by how accurately material can be reproduced. It builds no insight, but it supplies the factual base on which the higher levels rest.

The understanding level comes next and is associated with Morrison. Here the learner does not merely recall facts but grasps relationships among them, sees generalisations and principles, and can apply what has been learnt to new situations. Memory level teaching is a precondition for it, since one cannot understand relationships among facts one does not know.

The reflective level is the highest, associated with Hunt. It is problem centred and open, requiring the learner to think critically, reason independently and arrive at conclusions of their own. The classroom is democratic, the learner is highly active and the teacher acts as a guide rather than as a source of information. Both the memory and understanding levels are presupposed by it.

Differentiation is not one of these levels. The word does name a real idea in education - differentiated instruction, meaning the adaptation of teaching to the varying needs, readiness and interests of individual learners - but that concerns how teaching is adjusted across a class, not the depth of mental activity a lesson demands. Because it is a genuine pedagogical term, it is a well chosen distractor.

Hence differentiation is not a prescribed level of teaching.
