UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Though both Italian and German fascism shared authoritarianism, nationalism, and hostility to democracy, their origins and expressions differed. Italian fascism, under Mussolini, emphasized corporatism, where state and economy were integrated under party control. It was less racial in orientation and more focused on national unity and imperial revival. German fascism, under Hitler, was deeply rooted in racial ideology, anti-Semitism, and the doctrine of Aryan supremacy. While Mussolini glorified the state and sought to revive Roman grandeur, Hitler glorified race and pursued expansion through lebensraum. Italian fascism tolerated some institutions like monarchy and church, whereas German fascism dismantled all competing authorities for total control. In essence, Italian fascism was more pragmatic and opportunistic, while German fascism was more radical and destructive.
