Liver stores

BPSC 70th 2024 Prelims General Studies Re-Exam Question Paper (04-Jan-2025)
The correct answer is

None of these

None of the three combinations is correct — option 4.

What the liver actually stores. It stores the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, together with vitamin B12 — the one water-soluble vitamin the body can hold in quantity, enough for several years. Set that against the options :

OptionWhy it fails
A, B, C and DIncludes vitamin C, which is water-soluble and not stored; omits E and K
Only A and BOmits D, E and K
A, B and CAgain includes C and omits D, E and K
None of these✓ The correct set is A, D, E, K and B12

The principle behind it. Fat-soluble vitamins dissolve in the fatty tissue and in the liver and are held there; water-soluble vitamins — the B group generally, and C — dissolve in body fluids and the excess is excreted in urine, so they must be supplied regularly in the diet. That is why a deficiency of vitamin C appears within weeks while a store of vitamin A can last months. It is also why excess of the fat-soluble vitamins is dangerous: hypervitaminosis A is a real risk, whereas surplus vitamin C is simply passed out.

The liver’s other storage and functions. It stores glycogen, releasing glucose to hold the blood sugar steady; stores iron as ferritin; secretes bile; makes plasma proteins including albumin, fibrinogen and prothrombin; converts ammonia to urea in the ornithine cycle; and detoxifies drugs, alcohol and hormones. It is the largest gland in the body and the only organ with a substantial power of regeneration.

Where the question is going. Options that lump the vitamins into tidy alphabetical runs are a warning sign. The safe method is to recall the actual set first — A, D, E, K and B12 — and only then check the choices against it.

Hence, the answer is None of these.
