Question

Let P(m, n) be the statement “m divides n” where the Universe of discourse for both the variables is the set of positive integers. Determine the truth values of the following propositions.

(a) \(\exists m \forall n P(m, n)\)     (b) \(\forall n P(1, n)\)     (c) \(\forall m \forall n P(m, n)\)

UGC NET 2015 Paper 1 Question Paper (27-Dec-2015)
The correct answer is

(a) - True; (b) - True; (c) - False

Evaluate each quantified statement over the positive integers.

(a) Taking \(m = 1\) works because 1 divides every positive integer, so \(\exists m \forall n P(m, n)\) is True.

(b) \(\forall n P(1, n)\) says 1 divides every n, which is True.

(c) \(\forall m \forall n P(m, n)\) fails for \(m = 2, n = 3\) since 2 does not divide 3, so it is False.

Hence, (a) - True; (b) - True; (c) - False.
