The correct answer is

The verbal code

In communication theory a code is the system of signs used to encode a message, and codes are divided principally into verbal and non-verbal.

Language is the verbal code. Verbal comes from the Latin for word, so the verbal code is the system made of words, whether spoken or written. When a sender encodes a thought into a sentence and a receiver decodes that sentence back into meaning, both are using the shared verbal code of a language.

The non-verbal code is everything that carries meaning without words - facial expression, gesture, posture, eye contact, tone of voice, use of space and time, appearance. It accompanies language but is not language, so option (4) is the direct opposite of the answer.

Intrapersonal is not a code at all but a level of communication, referring to communication within oneself, such as thinking or self-talk, as distinct from interpersonal, group and mass communication.

The symbolic code is the tempting distractor, since language is undeniably symbolic - words stand for things by convention. But in the standard classification the term for the language code is verbal, and symbolic is a broader description that would equally cover many non-verbal signs. The question asks for the recognised label, and that is the verbal code.

Hence in communication, language is the verbal code.
