Copper Deficiency Soils Explained
Copper (Cu) deficiency occurs when the soil cannot supply enough available copper for plant needs. Certain soil types are more prone to this deficiency.
Organic Soil Copper Availability
- High Organic Matter Content: Organic soils contain a large amount of decomposed plant and animal residue.
- Chelation Mechanism: Organic matter components can form stable complexes with copper ions (chelation).
- Reduced Plant Uptake: This chelation process significantly reduces the availability of copper to plants, even if total copper levels are present in the soil.
Sandy soils can also experience copper deficiency due to low native copper content and rapid leaching, but the strong binding action within organic soils makes them a primary location for this issue.
Therefore, copper deficiency is notably more common in Organic soils.
