Christian Medical College, Vellore
India’s first human gene therapy trial for haemophilia was carried out by BRIC-InStem (Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine), Bengaluru, in collaboration with Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore.
The trial used a lentiviral vector to insert a working copy of the clotting-factor gene into the patient’s own stem cells, so the body could produce the missing clotting factor and prevent bleeding episodes in Haemophilia A.
The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, marking a landmark for indigenous gene-therapy research in India.
Hence, BRIC-InStem partnered with Christian Medical College, Vellore.
