Question

In a certain code language,

'A + B' means 'A is the mother of B';

'A - B' means 'A is the brother of B';

'A × B' means 'A is the sister of B' and

'A ÷ B' means 'A is the daughter of B'.

Based on the above, if  \(J + K ÷ L - T × R\). then how is J related to L?

The correct answer is

Wife

Code key: ‘+’ → mother, ‘–’ → brother, ‘×’ → sister, ‘÷’ → daughter.

The chain is \(J + K ÷ L - T × R\). Decode it from right to left or left to right, keeping each pair together.

  1. K ÷ L means “K is the daughter of L” ⇒ L is a parent of K.
  2. J + K means “J is the mother of K”.

Thus J and L are the two parents of the same child K.

  1. L – T means “L is the brother of T” ⇒ L is male.

Since L is male and a parent of K, L must be K’s father. Consequently, J (the mother) is the wife of L.

Answer → J is L’s wife.

Shortcut tip: When two coded statements give the same child with two different parents, those parents form a couple; then use any gender clue to label husband-wife correctly.
