Question

If ‘A’ stands for ‘÷’, ‘B’ stands for ‘×’, ‘C’ stands for ‘+’, and ‘D’ stands for ‘–’, what will come in place of the question mark (?) in the following equation?

18 D 4 A 4 B 8 C 30 = ?

The correct answer is

40

Replace each letter by its operation: D → –, A → ÷, B → ×, C → +. The expression 18 D 4 A 4 B 8 C 30 becomes 18 – 4 ÷ 4 × 8 + 30.

Apply BODMAS: division and multiplication first, from left to right. 4 ÷ 4 = 1, then 1 × 8 = 8. The expression becomes 18 – 8 + 30.

Now addition and subtraction from left to right: 18 – 8 = 10, and 10 + 30 = 40.

Check: 4 ÷ 4 × 8 = 8, and 18 – 8 + 30 = 40, so the value of the expression is 40.

Hence, 40.
