How does nutrition occur in Amoeba?

The correct answer is

Engulfs food and forms a food vacuole

Amoeba is a unicellular protozoan that shows holozoic nutrition: it takes in solid food particles, digests them inside the body, absorbs the useful substances and throws out the rest.

It pushes out finger-like projections of the cell surface called pseudopodia, which surround and engulf the food particle (phagocytosis). The engulfed food along with a little water is enclosed in a food vacuole.

Digestive enzymes enter the food vacuole and break the food down into simple soluble substances, which diffuse into the cytoplasm (absorption) and are used by the cell (assimilation). The undigested residue is thrown out through the cell surface (egestion).

Absorbing food through membrane pores or digesting it outside the body describes saprophytic organisms such as fungi, and photosynthesis is autotrophic nutrition found in green plants, not in Amoeba.

Hence, Engulfs food and forms a food vacuole.
