How do the respiratory and circulatory systems work together during exercise?

The correct answer is

Blood carries oxygen from lungs to muscles

During exercise the muscles need more energy, so they need more oxygen for respiration. The respiratory system increases the rate and depth of breathing, and oxygen from the air in the alveoli diffuses into the blood in the surrounding capillaries.

The circulatory system then transports it: haemoglobin in red blood cells carries the oxygen, and the heart beats faster to pump this oxygen-rich blood to the muscles. Carbon dioxide made by the muscles is carried back to the lungs and breathed out.

Carbon dioxide is a waste product of respiration, not a fuel for energy. The heart does not absorb oxygen; the blood takes it up in the lungs and the heart pumps that blood. Muscles use up oxygen and send carbon dioxide, not oxygen, back to the lungs.

Hence, Blood carries oxygen from lungs to muscles.
