The correct answer is

Oxygen is absorbed and carbon dioxide is released

The right side of the heart sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary arteries (pulmonary circulation).

In the lungs, the blood flows through capillaries surrounding the alveoli. Oxygen in the alveolar air is at higher concentration, so it diffuses into the blood and binds to haemoglobin.

Carbon dioxide is at higher concentration in the blood, so it diffuses out into the alveoli and is breathed out.

Nutrients are absorbed into blood in the small intestine (villi), not the lungs. Taking in CO₂ and releasing O₂ is the reverse of gas exchange in the lungs. Filtering blood to remove wastes is done by the kidneys.

Hence, the answer is Oxygen is absorbed and carbon dioxide is released.
