A covalent bond is formed when two atoms each contribute one or more electrons to create a shared electron pair. Both atoms attract this shared pair, holding them together. Examples: H₂ (H–H), water (O–H), methane (C–H).

Transfer of electrons produces ionic bonds (e.g., NaCl). Protons are not transferred in bond formation. Loss of neutrons would change the isotope (a nuclear process), not form a chemical bond.
