Carbon Cycle

The carbon cycle is a vital biogeochemical cycle describing the movement of carbon through the atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms. Carbon is essential for life, forming the backbone of organic molecules such as proteins, DNA, and carbohydrates. This cycle maintains the balance of carbon necessary for life on Earth.

Key Carbon Reservoirs:

  • Atmosphere: Mainly as carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), a key greenhouse gas.

  • Oceans: Dissolved $CO_2$, carbonates, bicarbonates, and carbon in marine organisms.

  • Land: Living biomass, dead organic matter in soil, and fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas).

  • Lithosphere: Rocks and sediments, particularly calcium carbonate in limestone.

Processes in the Carbon Cycle:

  • Photosynthesis: Plants, algae, and some bacteria absorb atmospheric or dissolved $CO_2$ and convert it into sugars, removing carbon from the atmosphere.

  • Respiration: Organisms release $CO_2$ back into air and water by breaking down organic compounds for energy.

  • Decomposition: Bacteria and fungi decompose dead matter, releasing $CO_2$ and enriching soil with carbon compounds.

  • Combustion: Burning biomass or fossil fuels releases significant $CO_2$, contributing to human-driven increases in atmospheric carbon.

  • Oceanic Uptake and Release: Oceans absorb $CO_2$, forming carbonic acid and supporting shell formation. When marine organisms die, their remains form carbon-rich sediments. Oceans also release $CO_2$ back into the atmosphere.

  • Sedimentation and Lithification: Over millions of years, buried organic matter forms fossil fuels or sedimentary rocks, acting as long-term carbon sinks.

  • Volcanic Activity: Releases $CO_2$ from Earth's interior naturally over geological timescales.

The carbon cycle is crucial for regulating atmospheric $CO_2$, sustaining ecosystems, and supporting life on Earth.
