Types of Axial Parenchyma in Dicotyledonous Woody Plants and their Phylogenetic Significance:
Axial parenchyma cells are longitudinally oriented, living cells within the secondary xylem, primarily involved in storage and short-distance transport. Their arrangement is highly diverse and has phylogenetic significance.

Apotracheal Parenchyma: Independent of vessels.

  • Diffuse: Scattered singly among fibers.
  • Diffuse-in-aggregates: Scattered in short tangential lines.
  • Banded (Terminal/Initial): Forming concentric tangential bands at growth ring boundaries (terminal if at ring end, initial if at ring start).
  • Phylogenetic Significance: Diffuse and banded apotracheal parenchyma are considered more primitive.

Paratracheal Parenchyma: Associated with vessels.

  • Scanty Paratracheal: Few cells around vessels.
  • Vasicentric: Forms a complete sheathing around vessels.
  • Aliform: Vasicentric with wing-like extensions.
  • Confluent: Aliform with wings joining to form short tangential bands.
  • Banded (Metatracheal): Forming long, continuous tangential bands that include vessels.
  • Phylogenetic Significance: Paratracheal types, especially more elaborate forms like aliform and confluent, are generally considered advanced, indicating increased specialization for water storage near conductive elements.

Primitive and Advanced Features of Ray Parenchyma:
Ray parenchyma cells are radially oriented, forming vascular rays crucial for lateral transport and storage.

Primitive Features of Ray Parenchyma:

  1. Heterocellular Rays: Composed of both upright (procumbent) and square cells.
  2. Multiseriate Rays: Rays that are several cells wide.

Advanced Features of Ray Parenchyma:

  1. Homocellular Rays: Composed entirely of procumbent cells.
  2. Uniseriate Rays: Rays that are only one cell wide.
