In Lycopodium, the gametophytes, or prothalli, exhibit considerable diversity, broadly categorized into three main types based on their morphology and habitat. The Cernuum type is typically small, green, and partially exposed on the soil surface, undertaking photosynthesis while its basal region is subterranean and associated with an endophytic fungus. The Clavatum type is entirely subterranean, non-green, tuberous, and saprophytic, relying heavily on a mycorrhizal association for nutrition. A third, the Phlegmaria type, found in some epiphytic species, is also subterranean, saprophytic, and irregularly branched.
Collecting these prothalli in nature is notoriously difficult. Their small size makes them hard to spot amidst leaf litter or buried in the soil. Furthermore, many species have a protracted development period, with spores taking several years to germinate and the gametophyte maturing over months or even up to 15 years. Their subterranean habit, coupled with a dependence on specific soil conditions and a symbiotic relationship with endophytic fungi, means they are often hidden and sparsely distributed, requiring extensive and careful searching.
