Question

During free fall, a body is in the state of:

RRB Group D 2018 Question Paper (11-Oct-2018) (Shift 3)
The correct answer is

Weightlessness

Apparent weight is the normal reaction between a body and the surface supporting it. During free fall the only force acting on the body is gravity, and both the body and any support (if present) accelerate downwards at g together.

Because there is no contact force to press against, the normal reaction becomes zero, so the body feels weightless. This is the same reason astronauts inside an orbiting spacecraft — which is essentially in free fall around Earth — appear weightless.

Hence, Weightlessness is correct.
