The story begins in the Eocene epoch with Hyracotherium, also known as Eohippus, a small, dog-sized forest-dweller with four toes on its front feet and three on its hind feet. It was adapted for browsing on soft leaves. As global climates shifted and forests gave way to expanding grasslands in the Oligocene, selective pressures favored adaptations for speed and grazing. This led to Mesohippus and then Miohippus, which were larger, had three toes on all feet, and developed slightly more complex teeth.
The Miocene epoch saw significant diversification. Merychippus emerged, standing around 10 hands tall, exhibiting further lengthening of limbs, a more reduced side-toe, and crucially, high-crowned (hypsodont) teeth with complex enamel folds, perfectly suited for grinding tough grasses. This specialization continued with Pliohippus in the Pliocene, which is often considered the first monodactyl (single-toed) horse, marking a crucial adaptation for swift movement across open plains. Finally, Equus, the genus of modern horses, evolved from a Dinohippus-like ancestor some 4-7 million years ago, consolidating the single hoof, long legs, and specialized teeth.
Regarding migration, North America served as the primary evolutionary center. From here, various equid species undertook multiple waves of migration. During the Miocene, some early three-toed horses like Anchitherium and Hipparion crossed the Bering land bridge into Eurasia, diversifying across the Old World. Later, around the Pliocene and Pleistocene, the true horses of the genus Equus also migrated from North America across the Bering land bridge into Asia, and subsequently spread into Europe and Africa, giving rise to modern horses, asses, and zebras. Interestingly, despite being their evolutionary cradle, horses went extinct in North America around 10,000 to 8,000 years ago, likely due to climate change and human hunting pressure, only to be reintroduced by European explorers in the 16th century.
