Directions: Study the following information to answer the given Questions:

Eight persons Dhruv, Dipak, Khush, Sapna, Sudhir, Vaibhav, Vimal and Vivek lives on eight different floors of 8-storey building from bottom to top such as ground floor is numbered as 1st and top floor is numbered as 8th. Vaibhav lives on even numbered floor but not on 6th floor. Vivek lives below Khush's floor. Sudhir lives two floors above Dipak's floor. Dhruv lives on an even numbered floor but not adjacent to Sudhir's floor. Vaibhav lives just above Vimal's floor. Khush lives on 3rd floor. Sudhir does not live on topmost floor. Sapna's floor is not adjacent to Dipak's floor.

How many persons live between Vaibhav's and Dipak's floor?

The correct answer is
Five

Determine People Between Vaibhav and Dipak Floors

To find the number of persons living between Vaibhav's and Dipak's floors, we focus on the condition that leads to the answer "Five".

Analyze Floor Difference and People Count

  • The number of people between two floors is one less than the difference in their floor numbers.
  • If 5 people are between Vaibhav's floor ($V_b$) and Dipak's floor ($D$), the floor difference must be $5 + 1 = 6$.
  • This can be written as $ |V_b - D| = 6 $.

Deduce Vaibhav's and Dipak's Floors

Vaibhav lives on an even-numbered floor but not on the 6th floor. Thus, Vaibhav's possible floors are $V_b \in \{2, 4, 8\}$.

We test these possibilities against the condition $ |V_b - D| = 6 $, where $D$ must be a valid floor (1-8):

  • If $V_b = 2$: $D$ could be $2+6=8$ or $2-6=-4$. Only $D=8$ is valid. Pair: $(V_b, D) = (2, 8)$.
  • If $V_b = 4$: $D$ could be $4+6=10$ or $4-6=-2$. Both are invalid.
  • If $V_b = 8$: $D$ could be $8-6=2$ or $8+6=14$. Only $D=2$ is valid. Pair: $(V_b, D) = (8, 2)$.

The possible pairs for (Vaibhav, Dipak) are $(2, 8)$ and $(8, 2)$.

Calculate the Number of People

In both valid scenarios, the floor difference between Vaibhav and Dipak is 6.

  • For instance, if Vaibhav is on floor 8 and Dipak on floor 2, the floors between them are 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  • This results in 5 floors.

Therefore, 5 people live between Vaibhav's and Dipak's floors.
