Prawn Culture

Prawn culture, a key segment of aquaculture, involves farming various prawn species for human consumption. Selecting the right species is crucial, as growth rates, disease resistance, and market demand differ among species.

Freshwater Prawns: The Giant River Prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is the most widely cultured freshwater species. It is favored for its fast growth, large body size, adaptability to diverse water conditions, and high market value. Males are easily recognized by their long blue claws.

Marine Prawns (Shrimps):

• Penaeus monodon (Black Tiger Prawn): Large, dark-colored, historically popular, but susceptible to diseases.
   
• Litopenaeus vannamei (Pacific White Shrimp): Currently the most cultured marine prawn globally. It grows rapidly, tolerates high stocking densities, resists many diseases, and adapts to varying salinities.
   
• Other cultured species include Fenneropenaeus indicus (Indian White Prawn) and Marsupenaeus japonicus (Kuruma Shrimp).
   

Methods of Culture:

• Extensive Culture: Low-input, low-density ponds relying on natural productivity; minimal management and water exchange. Yields are low, but costs are minimal.
   
• Semi-Intensive Culture: Moderate stocking densities, supplemental feeding, pond fertilization, and partial water management. Produces higher yields and requires more active management.
   
• Intensive Culture: High-density ponds or tanks with formulated feeds. Requires strict monitoring of water quality, aeration, and disease control. Modern systems may use recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). High production offsets higher capital and operational costs.
   

Successful prawn farming also depends on sourcing healthy post-larvae, proper pond preparation, continuous water quality monitoring, disease prevention, and timely harvesting to maximize productivity and profitability.
