Question

Consider a relation schema R = (U, V, W, X, Y, Z), on which the following functional dependencies hold :

        {U→V, VW→X, Y→W; X→U}

The candidate keys of R are :

UGC NET 2024 Management Question Paper (02-Sep-2024) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is

UYZ, VYZ, XYZ

A candidate key is a minimal set of attributes whose closure contains every attribute of the relation. Attributes that never appear on the right-hand side of any dependency must belong to every key.

Step 1 — Y and Z never appear on a right-hand side, so every key contains YZ. YZ+ = {Y, Z, W} (using Y → W), which is not all of R.

Step 2 — Add U: UYZ+ = UYZ → W → V (U → V) → X (VW → X) = {U, V, W, X, Y, Z}. UYZ is a key.

Step 3 — Add V: VYZ+ = VYZ → W → X (VW → X) → U (X → U) = all attributes. VYZ is a key.

Step 4 — Add X: XYZ+ = XYZ → W → U (X → U) → V (U → V) = all attributes. XYZ is a key. Adding W to YZ gives nothing new because Y already gives W.

Sets without Z, such as UY, VY or XY, can never reach Z, so they are not keys. VWZ lacks Y, and Y cannot be derived, so it is not a key either.

UYZ, VYZ, XYZ option is correct.

    $a_2$$b_3$$c_3$$d_1$

    I : {B} II : {B, C} III : {A, D} IV : {C, D}

    Which of the following options is/are always true?
  4. In the context of schema normalization in relational DBMS, consider a set F of functional dependencies. The set of all functional dependencies implied by F is called the closure of F. To compute the closure of F, Armstrong's Axioms can be applied. Consider $X$, $Y$, and $Z$ as sets of attributes over a relational schema. The three rules of Armstrong's Axioms are described as follows.

    Reflexivity: If $Y \subseteq X$, then $X \rightarrow Y$
    Augmentation: If $X \rightarrow Y$, then $XZ \rightarrow YZ$ for any $Z$
    Transitivity: If $X \rightarrow Y$ and $Y \rightarrow Z$, then $X \rightarrow Z$

    The additional rule of Union is defined as follows.

    Union: If $X \rightarrow Y$ and $X \rightarrow Z$, then $X \rightarrow YZ$

    It can be proved that the additional rule of Union is also implied by the three rules of Armstrong's Axioms. Listed below are four combinations of these three rules. Which one of these combinations is both necessary and sufficient for the proof ?
