UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Nikolai Vavilov profoundly impacted our understanding of cultivated plant origins. Through global expeditions, he postulated that crops originated in specific geographic "centers of origin," regions with high genetic diversity for a crop and its wild relatives.

Vavilov identified eight primary centers, suggesting these were where domestication first occurred, often in mountainous areas promoting isolation and differentiation. He differentiated primary centers (maximum genetic diversity) from secondary centers (high diversity from migration or crosses). His theory stressed these "gene centers" as vital for plant breeding, as they harbor genetic resistance and variability for crop improvement. This framework guided systematic exploration and conservation of plant genetic resources, foundational to modern plant breeding and germplasm efforts.

Three dye-yielding plants of India:

  1. Indigofera tinctoria (Family: Fabaceae):
Parts Used: Leaves and young stems. (Yields blue indigo dye).
  2. Rubia cordifolia (Family: Rubiaceae):
Parts Used: Roots. (Yields red madder dye).
  3. Bixa orellana (Family: Bixaceae):
Parts Used: Seeds. (Yields orange-red annatto dye, for food and textiles).
