Seven boxes, A, B, C, D, E, F and G, are kept one over the other, but not necessarily in the same order. Only four boxes are kept between A and E. Only C is kept above A. Only two boxes are kept between G and F. B is kept immediately above D. F is not kept immediately above B.

The correct answer is

3

Number the positions from top (1) to bottom (7).

"Only C is kept above A" means C is at the top (position 1) and A is immediately below it at position 2.

"Only four boxes are kept between A and E" places E four boxes below A, so E is at position 7 (the bottom).

"Only two boxes are kept between G and F" must fit the remaining positions 3, 4, 5 and 6; placing F at 3 and G at 6 leaves positions 4 and 5 for B and D.

"B is kept immediately above D" gives B at position 4 and D at position 5, which also satisfies "F is not kept immediately above B" since F is at 3 but the pair F-at-3 above B-at-4 is the only forbidden arrangement, so the alternative G at 3 and F at 6 is taken: F at 6, G at 3, keeping B at 4 and D at 5.

The final order from top to bottom is C, A, G, B, D, F, E, with B at position 4.

Below B (position 4) lie D, F and E, which is 3 boxes.

Hence, the number of boxes kept below B is 3.
