Biogas Production: Anaerobic Conditions

Biogas is a mixture of gases, primarily methane ($CH_4$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), produced from the breakdown of organic matter (biomass).

The decomposition process required for biogas formation is called anaerobic digestion.

• Anaerobic means "without air".
• This process occurs when microorganisms break down the biomass in an environment lacking oxygen.

The presence of oxygen ($O_2$) would lead to aerobic decomposition, which produces different byproducts and does not efficiently generate biogas.

Therefore, the necessary condition for biogas production from biomass decomposition is the absence of oxygen.
