Question

Based on the English alphabetical order, three of the following four letter-clusters are alike in a certain way and thus form a group. Which letter-cluster DOES NOT belong to that group? (Note: The odd one out is not based on the number of consonants/vowels or their position in the letter-cluster.)

The correct answer is

SPL

Write the place of each letter in the English alphabet (A = 1, …, Z = 26) and find the moves from the first letter to the second and from the second to the third (counting back past A wraps round to Z).

Cluster1st → 2nd2nd → 3rd
KIEK (11) → I (9): –2I (9) → E (5): –4
XVRX (24) → V (22): –2V (22) → R (18): –4
SPLS (19) → P (16): –3P (16) → L (12): –4
FDZF (6) → D (4): –2D (4) → Z (26, i.e. 0 + 26): –4

In KIE, XVR and FDZ the letters move 2 places back and then 4 places back. In SPL the first move is 3 places back instead of 2.

Therefore SPL does not belong to the group.

Check: moving S back by 2 gives Q, so the cluster would have to be SQM to fit the group; SPL breaks the –2, –4 pattern.

Hence, SPL.
