Question

Based on the English alphabetical order, three of the following four letter cluster-pairs are alike in a certain way and thus form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to that group?

(Note: The odd one out is not based on the number of consonants/vowels or their position in the letter-cluster.)

The correct answer is

IJ - MN

Write each letter's place in the English alphabet (A = 1, …, Z = 26) and compare the first letters of the two clusters with each other, and the second letters with each other.

PairFirst lettersSecond letters
IJ - MNI (9) → M (13): +4J (10) → N (14): +4
LJ - KML (12) → K (11): –1J (10) → M (13): +3
DB - CED (4) → C (3): –1B (2) → E (5): +3
MK - LNM (13) → L (12): –1K (11) → N (14): +3

In LJ - KM, DB - CE and MK - LN the first letter moves 1 place back and the second letter moves 3 places forward. In IJ - MN both letters move 4 places forward.

Therefore IJ - MN does not follow the pattern shared by the other three pairs.

Check: moving I back by 1 gives H and moving J forward by 3 gives M, so the pair would have to be IJ - HM to fit the group; IJ - MN breaks the rule.

Hence, IJ - MN.
