Question

An object travels the first 25 m in 4 s and then the next 15 m in 2 s. What is the average speed of the object?

This question was previously asked in
RRB Group D 2018 Question Paper (22-Sep-2018) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

\(6.67\text{ ms}^{-1}\)

Average speed is the total distance covered divided by the total time taken. It is measured in metres per second and is written with the unit m s-1.

Total distance = 25 + 15 = 40 m and total time = 4 + 2 = 6 s, so average speed = \(\dfrac{40}{6} \approx 6.67\text{ m s}^{-1}\). Options with units s-1, m or the wrong exponent are dimensionally inconsistent with speed.

Hence, \(6.67\text{ ms}^{-1}\).
