Question

An object is placed 15 cm from a concave lens of focal length 10 cm. What is the nature and position of the image formed by the lens?

The correct answer is

The image is virtual, upright and 6 cm from the lens on the same side as the object

For a concave (diverging) lens use the lens formula with u = −15 cm and f = −10 cm.

1/v − 1/u = 1/f ⇒ 1/v = 1/f + 1/u = −1/10 + 1/(−15) = −1/10 − 1/15 = −5/30 = −1/6, so v = −6 cm.

A concave lens always forms a virtual, upright, diminished image on the same side as the object, 6 cm from the lens.

Hence, the answer is The image is virtual, upright and 6 cm from the lens on the same side as the object.
