Question

Alloy A contains copper and zinc in the ratio of 4 ∶ 3 and alloy B contains copper and zinc in the ratio 5 ∶ 2. A and B are taken in the ratio of 5 ∶ 6 and melted to form a new alloy. The percentage of zinc in the new alloy is closest to∶

This question was previously asked in
SSC CGL 2018 (Tier 2) Statistics Previous Year Paper (22-feb-2018)
The correct answer is

35

Zinc fraction in A is \(\tfrac{3}{7}\); in B it is \(\tfrac{2}{7}\). Taking 5 units of A and 6 units of B (total 11 units):

Zinc from A: \(5\times\tfrac{3}{7}=\tfrac{15}{7}\)

Zinc from B: \(6\times\tfrac{2}{7}=\tfrac{12}{7}\)

Total zinc: \(\tfrac{15}{7}+\tfrac{12}{7}=\tfrac{27}{7}\) in 11 units.

\[\text{Zinc \%}=\frac{27/7}{11}\times100=\frac{2700}{77}\approx 35.06\%\]

Closest option is 35.
