Question

A trader sold an article for ₹5,040 and earned a profit of 12%. Had he sold it for ₹4,680, what would have been the profit or loss percentage?

The correct answer is

4% profit

Let the cost price (CP) be \(x\).

Since a 12% profit was earned on a selling price of ₹5,040: \(x \times 1.12 = 5040 \Rightarrow x = \frac{5040}{1.12} = 4500\).

So the cost price is ₹4,500.

If sold for ₹4,680, the profit would be \(4680 - 4500 = 180\).

Profit percentage \(= \frac{180}{4500} \times 100 = 4\%\).
