Question

A student is given four samples: muddy water, air, milk, and salt dissolved in water. The task is to select the one that best represents a heterogeneous mixture. Which sample should the student choose?

The correct answer is

Muddy water

A heterogeneous mixture does not have a uniform composition throughout; its different components can be seen as separate parts, and in a suspension they settle on standing.

In muddy water the soil particles do not dissolve, they are visible to the naked eye, the mixture is not uniform from top to bottom, and the mud settles when the sample is left undisturbed. So it is the clearest example of a heterogeneous mixture among the samples.

Air is a homogeneous mixture of gases, and salt dissolved in water is a true solution with a uniform composition. Milk is a colloid whose particles are too small to be seen and do not settle, so although a colloid is heterogeneous at the microscopic level, it appears uniform to the naked eye and does not represent a heterogeneous mixture as clearly as muddy water does.

Hence, Muddy water.
