A student accidentally spills a small amount of dilute sulfuric acid on the laboratory bench and neutralises it with sodium bicarbonate.

Which product confirms that a neutralization reaction has occurred?

RRB Group D 2025 Question Paper (18-Aug-2026) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

Formation of carbon dioxide and salt

Dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4) spilled in a laboratory is neutralized with a mild base such as sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda) or a carbonate.

The acid reacts with the hydrogen carbonate/carbonate to form a salt, water and carbon dioxide: H2SO4 + 2NaHCO3 → Na2SO4 + 2H2O + 2CO2.

The brisk effervescence of carbon dioxide along with the formation of a salt shows that the acid has been neutralized.

Hydrogen gas is produced when an acid reacts with an active metal, not in neutralization; metal oxides and oxygen gas are not products of an acid–base reaction.

Hence, the answer is formation of carbon dioxide and salt.
