Question

A sound signal used for checking resonance in an air-duct system has a frequency of 850 Hz. The speed of sound in air is 340 m/s. What is the wavelength of the sound wave?

The correct answer is

0.40 m

For a wave, speed, frequency, and wavelength are related by \(v = f\lambda\), so the wavelength is \(\lambda = \dfrac{v}{f}\).

Here, \(v = 340\ \text{m/s}\) and \(f = 850\ \text{Hz}\), so:

\(\lambda = \dfrac{340}{850} = 0.40\ \text{m}\)

The wavelength of the sound wave is therefore 0.40 m.
