Question

A series is given with one term wrong. Select the wrong term from the given alternatives.

-913, -916, -924, -937, -955, -975, -1006, -1039

The correct answer is

-975

In a wrong-term series we first read the pattern of the correct terms and then find the single term that breaks it.

All terms are negative, so ignore the sign and study the magnitudes: 913, 916, 924, 937, 955, 975, 1006, 1039.

Look at the differences between consecutive magnitudes: \(916-913=3\), \(924-916=8\), \(937-924=13\), \(955-937=18\).

These gaps are 3, 8, 13, 18 — an arithmetic pattern that increases by 5 each step, so the next gaps should be 23, 28, 33.

Applying the expected gap of 23 to 955 gives \(955+23=978\), so the sixth magnitude should be 978, i.e. the term should be -978.

The series instead prints -975, which does not fit the required difference of 23.

Continuing correctly, \(978+28=1006\) and \(1006+33=1039\), which confirms the rest of the series is consistent.

Hence the wrong term is -975.
