Question

A boat travels 45 km upstream in 9 hours and 72 km downstream in 6 hours. Find the speed of the stream.

The correct answer is

3.5 km/hr

Upstream speed = 45/9 = 5 km/h. Downstream speed = 72/6 = 12 km/h.

Speed of stream = (downstream − upstream) / 2 = (12 − 5) / 2 = 3.5 km/h.

Hence, the answer is 3.5 km/hr.
