Scorpene-Class Submarines: INS Vagsheer and Capabilities of Kalvari-Class Fleet

Why in news?

• The Indian Navy is set to commission its sixth Scorpene-class submarine, INS Vagsheer, on January 15, marking another milestone in strengthening the nation's defense capabilities.

• Built under Project-75 at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) with technology transfer from Naval Group (France), the Scorpene-class submarines are integral to India's modern naval fleet.

Key Features of Scorpene-Class (Kalvari-Class) Submarines:

• Design and Dimensions: These diesel-electric attack submarines are 220 feet long and 40 feet high, making them formidable assets for underwater warfare.
• Propulsion: Powered by advanced diesel-electric systems, the submarines can stay submerged for up to 50 days and are designed for optimum stealth in operations.
• Maximum Depth: The Kalvari-class submarines can dive to a maximum operating depth of 350 meters (1,150 feet), enhancing their operational capabilities.
• Speed: Capable of reaching 20 knots submerged and 11 knots on the surface, making them highly agile for tactical operations.
• Armament and Weapons Systems: Equipped with advanced torpedoes, missiles, and surveillance systems, the submarines are versatile in intelligence gathering, anti-surface warfare, and precision strikes.
