What Are Radio Jets?

- Radio jets are high-speed streams of particles and electromagnetic radiation that extend from celestial objects such as X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei (AGN), and quasars.
- These jets are closely linked to X-ray activity and display complex behavior.
Formation and Characteristics
- Radio jets originate from X-ray binaries, AGN, and quasars.
- They can extend up to ~10¹⁷ cm in various observed cosmic structures.
- These jets contain individual knots or features that move at speeds ranging from 0.3 to 0.9 times the speed of light (c).
Radio Emission and Evolution
- Rapid emission rise: Radio signals increase within ~10³ seconds, reaching distances of ~3×10¹³ cm.
- Short lifespan: The jets decay over a few to tens of days.
- Visibility limitations: Due to self-Compton losses and free-free absorption in stellar winds, smaller-scale radio emissions are harder to detect.
