  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office accused Hamas of reneging on key elements of the ceasefire agreement, calling it a tactic to extract more concessions.

Cabinet Approval Pending

  • Israel’s cabinet has delayed approving the deal, awaiting confirmation from mediators that Hamas agrees to all terms.

Hamas’ Response

  • Senior Hamas leader Sami Abu Zuhri denied Israel’s accusations, asserting there is no basis for the claims.

Israel-Hamas Ceasefire

Background: Israel-Hamas Conflict and Ceasefire Deal

Roots of the Conflict

  • The conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a large-scale attack, killing over 1,200 Israelis and abducting 251 hostages. In response, Israel’s military campaign caused extensive destruction in Gaza, with over 46,700 civilian casualties.

Humanitarian Crisis

  • Gaza’s 2.3 million residents face severe food, medical, and shelter shortages due to widespread displacement.

Mediated Negotiations

  • The ceasefire agreement, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, could end one of Gaza’s deadliest wars if implemented. It aims to address both immediate and long-term issues in the region.

Key Provisions of the Ceasefire Deal

Initial 42-Day Ceasefire

  • The deal proposes a 42-day truce, enabling:
  • Release of hostages held by Hamas.
  • Exchange of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.

Hostage Exchange Terms

  • Hostage Releases by Hamas:
    • 33 hostages, including women, children, elderly, and wounded civilians, to be released in phases.
  • Israel’s Releases:
    • 30 Palestinian women, children, or elderly prisoners for each civilian hostage freed.
    • 50 Palestinian prisoners for each female soldier released, including those serving life sentences.

Troop Withdrawal and Aid Access

  • Israeli Troop Movements: Troops to withdraw to a 1-km-wide buffer zone along Gaza’s borders.
  • Humanitarian Aid: Hundreds of trucks carrying essential supplies—food, medicine, fuel—to enter Gaza daily.
  • Infrastructure Rebuilding: Efforts to restore electricity, sewage systems, and shelters with international support.

Second Phase: Governance Negotiations

  • Talks on Gaza’s governance will start on Day 16.
  • Israel demands Hamas’ removal from power, while Hamas seeks long-term calm guarantees.
  • Remaining hostages and prisoners to be released as part of a final agreement.

Third Phase: Reconstruction

  • Internationally supervised reconstruction of Gaza.
  • Return of deceased hostages’ bodies.
