The Indian grey wolf, a critically endangered subspecies of the gray wolf, is making conservation strides at the Bankapur Wolf Sanctuary in Koppal district, Karnataka. Recently, eight wolf pups were born, marking a significant achievement for the sanctuary.

About the Indian Grey Wolf

Scientific Name: Canis lupus pallipes

The Indian grey wolf is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southwest Asia. With an estimated population of just 2,000–3,000 individuals, it ranks among the world's most endangered wolf populations.

Habitat and Distribution

• Preferred Habitat: Grasslands, scrublands, and open landscapes.
• Geographical Range: Found in arid and semi-arid regions of India, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh.

Characteristics and Behavior

• Physical Features: Smaller and more slender than the Eurasian wolf, the Indian grey wolf has short fur suited for warmer climates. Adults typically weigh 19–25 kg and stand 57–72 cm at the shoulder.
• Social Behavior: These wolves live in small packs of 6–8 members.
• Diet: They primarily prey on blackbuck, antelope, hares, and rodents using strategic hunting techniques.

Threats to Survival

1. Habitat Loss: Urbanization, agricultural expansion, and overgrazing reduce their natural habitats.
2. Human-Wildlife Conflict: Livestock predation often leads to retaliatory killings by farmers.
3. Decline in Prey: Overhunting of prey species impacts their food availability.
4. Genetic Risks: Low genetic diversity and hybridization with domestic dogs pose additional threats.

About Bankapur Wolf Sanctuary

Located in Karnataka, the Bankapur Wolf Sanctuary spans 332 hectares of scrub forests, hills, and caves. Declared Karnataka’s first Wolf Wildlife Sanctuary at the 15th Wildlife Board meeting, it is a critical haven for the Indian grey wolf.

The Karnataka Forest Department has implemented enhanced safety measures, fostering a thriving population of these wolves. This recent birth of eight pups reflects the success of ongoing conservation efforts.
