How to prepare History Subjects for UPSC Mains Exam?

2. Source Material: One need to stick to limited sources for these topics so that you can finish your preparation in a timely manner and will be able to revise also.

• Indian Heritage and Culture- UPSC has frequently asked questions on themes like Indus Valley Civilisation, literature, foreigners accounts,coinage, cave architecture, temple architecture, painting tradition etc from ancient and medieval period. For these topics you can refer to relevant sections from old NCERTs of Ancient and Medieval India.
• Modern Indian History and Freedom Struggle -You can refer to Spectrum's “A Brief History of Modern India” or concise notes of any reliable coaching institute.
• Post-independence Consolidation- You can read India after Independence by Bipin Chandra. But if you are preparing for this topic after the preliminary examination they prefer a summary of events.
• World History topics- You can refer to old NCERTs like "History of the World" by Arjun Dev.

3. Focus on PYQS: UPSC reframed its syllabus in 2013, Therefore we have almost 10 years PYQS which is a huge sample size to analyze the trends and key themes.Therefore, toppers also suggest to prepare PYQ themes thoroughly.

4. Notes Making: Four subjects of history make the preparation of GS paper one time consuming. Therefore, one needs to focus on making precise notes which will be easy to revise before mock tests and final examinations.

5. Answer Writing Practice: Answer writing practice is critical to develop analytical skills which are important to write history answers. You need to focus on PYQ writing.
