FREE-AI Committee: An Overview

Why in the News?

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has established a committee called FREE-AI (Framework for Responsible and Ethical Enablement of Artificial Intelligence) to focus on ethical and responsible AI adoption in the financial sector.

Key Objectives of FREE-AI Committee

  1. Develop Ethical AI Framework:
    • Establish guidelines for responsible and ethical AI deployment in the financial sector.

Committee Composition

  • The eight-member committee is chaired by Pushpak Bhattacharyya, Professor at IIT Bombay.
  • Other members are representatives from HDFC Bank, IIT Madras, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, law firm Trilegal and Microsoft India.

Timeline and Support

  • Report Submission:

    The committee is expected to submit its recommendations within six months of its first meeting.

  • Support from RBI:

    The RBI’s FinTech Department will provide secretarial support to the committee.
