CBSE's Two-Examination System for Class 10: A Major Reform Under NEP 2020

Feb 27, 2025

CBSE Proposes Two Board Exams for Class 10 Students

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a Two-Examination System for Class 10 students, set to be implemented from 2026 onwards.
  • Under this system, students will have the flexibility to appear for either one or both board exams within the same academic year, reducing stress and enhancing learning outcomes.

Key Features of the Two-Examination System

Two Exam Attempts in One Academic Year

  • Students will take the main board exam once.
  • If dissatisfied with their scores, they can reappear for an improvement exam within the same year.

Emphasis on Conceptual Learning

  • Exams will focus on core competencies, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills rather than rote memorization.

No Extra Pressure to Take the Second Exam

  • The second attempt is optional and is meant only for students who wish to improve their scores.

Why Is This Change Being Introduced?

The current single-exam system is often seen as a high-stakes event, leading to excessive stress and reliance on coaching classes. In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this reform aims to:

  • Reduce exam pressure and anxiety.
  • Encourage conceptual learning over rote memorization.
  • Offer students a second chance to improve scores within the same academic year.
  • Make exams more student-friendly and competency-based.

National Education Policy (NEP) 2020: A Game-Changer in Indian Education

The NEP 2020 is built on the principles of access, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability. It covers school education, higher education, and skill development, introducing several transformative changes.

Key Reforms in School Education

  • New 5+3+3+4 School Structure (Replacing 10+2).
  • Board Exam Reforms – Two board exams per year for Class 10 and 12 (from 2026). Multilingual Education – Mother tongue-based learning in early grades.
  • Focus on Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN) – Strengthening basic reading and math skills.
  • Vocational Education from Class 6 – Hands-on learning, internships, and early introduction to coding.
  • Flexibility in Subject Choice – No rigid Science/Commerce/Arts streams.
  • Digital & Inclusive Education – Platforms like Diksha, Swayam, and eVidya for enhanced online learning.

Higher Education Reforms

  • Multidisciplinary Education & 4-Year UG Degrees.
  • Common University Entrance Test (CUET) – A single entrance exam for all central universities.
  • Establishment of Multidisciplinary Institutions – All HEIs to become multidisciplinary by 2040.
  • Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) – A single regulator replacing UGC, AICTE, and NCTE (excluding medical & law institutions).
  • Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) – Allows students to store and transfer academic credits across institutions.

Major Schemes & Initiatives Under NEP 2020

  • NIPUN Bharat (FLN Mission) – Ensuring basic literacy and numeracy by Grade 3 by 2026-27.
  • PM SHRI Schools – Upgrading 14,500 schools as model institutions under NEP 2020.
  • Samagra Shiksha Scheme 2.0 – An integrated education scheme from preschool to higher secondary.
  • DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for School Education) – An e-learning platform for students and teachers.
  • National Digital Education Architecture (NDEAR) – A unified digital platform for data-driven governance in education.
  • Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) – Enables flexible learning pathways for students.
