• The virus traces back to a 1996 outbreak in a goose farm in Guangdong, China. The latest H5N1 strain emerged in Europe in 2020, rapidly spreading to Africa and Asia.

Causes of the Outbreak

• While the exact reasons behind large-scale outbreaks remain unclear, climate change, particularly rising sea temperatures, has been linked to weakened wildlife immune systems, increasing vulnerability to infections.

Understanding H5N1

• H5N1 is a deadly influenza virus that causes severe respiratory disease in birds.
• If transmitted to humans, it has a high fatality rate of approximately 60%.
