Why in news

The Union Cabinet approved the continuation of Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) with a Rs 2,750 crore budget until March 2028, aiming to enhance India's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem towards "Viksit Bharat."

About Atal Innovation Mission (AIM)

The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), launched by NITI Aayog in 2016, is a flagship initiative aimed at fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across India.

With the recent Union Cabinet approval for its continuation, AIM continues to play a pivotal role in driving India's transformation towards an innovation-driven economy.

Key Components of Atal Innovation Mission (AIM)

  • Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs):

ATLs are established in schools across India to inspire creativity and innovation among students from class 6 to 12. These labs provide students with access to tools and resources to develop hands-on projects and solve real-world problems.

  • Atal Incubation Centers (AICs):

AICs are dedicated to supporting startups by providing infrastructure, mentorship, and resources for early-stage companies. These centers foster innovation in diverse sectors by helping entrepreneurs bring their ideas to market.

  • Atal New India Challenges:

This program promotes sector-specific product innovations, focusing on solving critical challenges in areas such as agriculture, health, and education. The challenges encourage collaboration between startups, government, and other stakeholders to address pressing national problems.

Objectives of AIM

  • Promote Problem-Solving Mindset: Encourage students across India to think innovatively and creatively, preparing them for future challenges.
  • Support Incubation Centers: Foster the establishment of new incubation centers to provide vital support to the startup ecosystem.
  • Encourage Innovation Across Sectors: Drive innovation through challenges and partnerships, addressing sector-specific needs.
  • Promote Entrepreneurship: Through the Self-Employment and Talent Utilization (SETU) program, AIM aims to provide the necessary support for budding entrepreneurs to succeed.

Achievements of Atal Innovation Mission

  • Over 10,000 ATLs: More than 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs have been set up in schools, impacting millions of students across India.
  • 100+ AICs Operational: Over 100 Atal Incubation Centers are operational, providing a solid foundation for new startups.
  • Successful Innovations: AIM has helped launch impactful innovations in agriculture, health, and education, contributing to India’s growth and development.

Significance of Atal Innovation Mission

  • Driving India's Innovation Economy: AIM plays a central role in supporting India’s shift towards an innovation-driven economy.
  • Boosting Atmanirbhar Bharat: AIM contributes to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by nurturing self-reliance and building a robust innovation ecosystem.
