Feb 21, 2025
Introduction
Anna Bhagya Yojana is a flagship welfare scheme launched by the Government of Karnataka to provide free rice to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
This initiative, part of the state's Public Distribution System (PDS), aims to enhance food security and improve nutritional standards among economically weaker sections.
Key Features of Anna Bhagya Yojana
Free Rice Distribution: Initially, the scheme provided 7 kg of free rice per person per month to BPL families. However, the quantity has been revised multiple times based on government policies and availability.
Cash Transfer (DBT): Due to supply constraints, the Karnataka government introduced a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of ₹170 per person per month to compensate for the reduced rice supply.
Target Beneficiaries: The scheme benefits families holding Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households (PHH) ration cards.
Implementation: The distribution is managed through fair price shops under the PDS.
Objectives of Anna Bhagya Yojana
Ensure Food Security: The scheme aims to eliminate hunger and malnutrition among BPL families.
Improve Nutritional Standards: By providing free rice, the program supports a balanced diet for underprivileged sections.
Reduce Financial Burden: It helps economically weaker families by cutting down their monthly food expenses.
