Air India Introduces In-Flight Wi-Fi Service on Select Aircraft

Why in the News?

On January 1, 2025, Air India introduced in-flight Wi-Fi services on select domestic and international flights.

Eligible Aircraft for In-Flight Wi-Fi Service

Air India’s in-flight Wi-Fi service is available on the following aircraft:

• Widebody Aircraft: Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9
• Select Narrowbody Aircraft: Airbus A321neo

These aircraft are equipped with advanced technology to provide uninterrupted internet connectivity, ensuring passengers enjoy seamless online access during their flight.

First Airline in India to Offer In-Flight Wi-Fi on Domestic Routes

With this service, Air India becomes the first airline in India to offer in-flight Wi-Fi on domestic flights, setting a new benchmark for air travel in India. Travelers can stay connected to the internet via Wi-Fi-enabled devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

Multiple Device Connectivity and Free Wi-Fi Access

Once the aircraft reaches an altitude of 10,000 feet, passengers can connect multiple devices simultaneously to the in-flight Wi-Fi. For a limited time, Air India is offering free Wi-Fi access as part of an introductory period, making it an attractive feature for travelers.

How In-Flight Internet Works: Air-to-Ground and Satellite Systems

Air India employs two main systems to provide high-speed internet during flights:

1. Air-to-Ground System

• Mechanism: The system utilizes an on-board antenna that picks up signals from ground-based towers.
• Limitations: The quality of service depends on the availability of ground towers, and the antennas are mounted beneath the aircraft.

2. Satellite-Based System

• Direct Signal Transmission: Signals are transmitted directly from satellites to the antenna located on top of the aircraft.
• Advantage Over Oceans: This system is particularly effective on overwater flights where ground towers are not available.
• Dynamic Antenna Adjustment: The aircraft’s antenna constantly adjusts to maintain the best signal reception as the plane moves.

On-Board Router for Seamless Connectivity

Data from antennas is transmitted to passengers' devices via an on-board router. Satellite-based services are activated once the aircraft reaches an altitude of 3,000 meters (10,000 feet).
