IES Eligibility Criteria

UPSC has segregated various norms that a candidate needs to fulfil before applying for IES 2021. UPSC IES eligibility criteria are defined by the following standards:


An IES 2020 Applicant must be either: 

  1. a citizen of India, or 
  2. a subject of Nepal, or 
  3. a subject of Bhutan, or 
  4. a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or 
  5. a person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, The United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. 

Provided that the candidates belonging to categories (2), (3), (4) and (5) produce a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India at the time of final allotment.  

IES Age Limit 

  • IES/ ESE aspirants must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on January 1, 2021.
  • In other words, they must have been born not earlier than January 2, 1991, and not later than January 1, 2000.  
  • Government servants and reserved category candidates will be given relaxation in upper age limit

IES Apply Online

IES Application Form 2021

IES Application Form will be made available from April 7-27, 2021. Candidates filled the application form in online mode only at Candidates have to follow the given steps to register themselves for ESE 2020 exam:

Step 1: IES Registration 2021

  • Visit the official website of UPSC –
  • Enter your name, date of birth, email ID, mobile number, and other personal details.

Step 2: Pay IES Application Fee

  • IES Registration Fee can be remitted via online as well as offline mode.
  • Candidates can pay the fees in cash at any SBI Bank branch or via Debit/Credit Card or SBI Net Banking.
  • The application fee is INR 200, however, women, SC, ST, and PWD candidates are exempted from fee payment. 
  • The last day to generate e-challan will be April 27, 2021.

Step 3: Fill IES Application Form

  • Indicate your preferred exam centers and your engineering core branch.
  • Enter your category, communication details, work experience details, etc.

Step 4: Upload Photo, Sign & ID Proof

Candidates have to upload their scanned images of passport size photograph, signature, and photo ID proof in prescribed formats.

Step 5: Declaration & Submission

  • Candidates are advised to fill the form very carefully and proofread it before submitting it. 
  • The last step is to read the declaration and click on “I agree”.
  • Click on Final Submit and download the filled-in form for future reference.
  • Candidates can make correction in the form till October 15, 2019

  • IES Exam Pattern 2020 is defined by Union Public Service Commission. 
  • IES 2020 comprises three stages- Prelims, Main Exam and Personal Interview.
  • IES Preliminary exam is an objective paper whereas IES Main exam is a descriptive paper.
  • Candidates will have to clear prelims to appear for the Main examination.
  • Those who qualify for the main exam will proceed to the personality test also known as the Interview round. 
  • Both the sections of the written test cover the entire syllabus of relevant engineering subject (Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering).

  • The medium of Mains exam paper will be English only.
  • 5% marks will be deducted from the total marks scored by a candidate if the handwriting is not easily legible.

IES Interview Round 

  • Candidates shortlisted after IES Main exam will be called for the personal interview session.
  • It is officially known as the ‘Personality Test’ round.
  • Candidates are required to fill the Detailed Application Form (DAF) online. 
  • In this stage, selected candidates will be judged on his/ her leadership skills, personality, and intellect. 
  • A maximum of 200 marks is allotted to the personality test (interview test). 

Provision for PwD candidates 

  • UPSC has made provision of providing a compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour for candidates belonging to the PwD category.
  • Also, candidates with (minimum of 40% impairment) will be allowed to write Engineering Services Examination (ESE) with the help of a scribe.

IES Result for Prelims exam 2021 will be declared in the month of September 2021. IES Result will be published only on the official website of UPSC.

  • Only those candidates who qualify for the prelims shall be able to proceed to the IES 2020 Main exam.
  • Similarly, a list will be prepared for candidates who will be called for Personal Interview. Furthermore, a final list of the selected candidates will be disclosed.
  • The Result for each tier will be declared separately.

  • A PDF file will be uploaded declaring the results of candidates.

IES Answer Keys 2021

IES Answer Keys for Prelims Exam will be uploaded by the commission on the official website.

  • The unofficial answer keys from top coaching centers will also be released. 
  • Official IES Answer keys will be released soon after the conclusion of the exam.
  • The Representations against answer keys can be submitted via Email within the stipulated time period.
  • Any representation without textual or documentation proof will not be entertained.

  • IES 2021 Cutoff for Preliminary exam will be disclosed at the time of result declaration.
  • Candidates can check the cut off of IES online by visiting the official website of UPSC.
  • To qualify for the next stage i.e. IES Main, it is important to score equal or more marks than the set qualifying marks.
  • The cut off is different for all the exams. The following factors determine the cutoff:
    • The total number of students who appeared for IES
    • Number of vacancies 
    • The difficulty level of the engineering service examination
    • Candidates’ performances

IES Selection

IES 2021 Selection Procedure

The two-staged IES Selection Procedure adopted by UPSC for IES 2020 exam is:

  • Written Examination
  • Personal Interview

The written exam comprises two exams- Preliminary and Main exam.

  • Candidates are required to qualify for the IES cutoff set by the commission.
  • Clearing IES 2020 Prelims is essential to proceed to IES 2020 Main Exam.
  • The main exam is the qualifying criteria for the Personal Interview session.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be called for the final stage i.e. Personality Test.
  • The final results and merit list form the basis of an appointment letter in the name of the candidate.

Ans. IES Prelims 2020 will consist of two paper, Paper 1 will have 100 questions from General Studies and Paper 2 will have 150 questions from Engineering Discipline. The questions are of Multiple Choice. Each question will have 4 choices in which one answer is correct.

Ques.  What is the marking scheme for IES Prelims?

Ans. In IES Prelims, for each correct answer, 2 marks are awarded. For each wrong answer, one-third mark is deducted from the candidates’ scores. Marks obtained in this stage are counted for determining the final order of merit.

Ques.  What is the syllabus for the Preliminary stage?

Ans. Paper 1 will have questions from General Studies and Engineering Aptitude and Paper 2 will have questions from the Engineering background of the candidate(Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Electrical/Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering).

Ques.  Are IES  2020 Prelims marks taken into account while preparing the final merit list?

Ans. Only the marks scored by the candidate in Paper 1 are considered for the final merit list. However, to qualify for IES 2020 Main, it is essential for candidates to qualify the cutoff of IES 2020 Prelims.

Ques.  When will the result of IES 2020 Prelims will be released?

Ans. IES Prelims 2020 Results will be released by UPSC on February 17, 2020 tentatively on the official website.

Ques.  What is the cut off for IES Prelims 2020?

Ans. The minimum marks required to qualify for IES prelims are set to 15% i.e. 75 marks out of 500 for General and reserved categories candidates.

Ques.  What is the procedure after IES Prelims 2020 Results?

Ans. After the declaration of the result, UPSC will release the list of candidates who have qualified for the Second stage i.e. IES 2020 Mains. UPSC does not release any merit list for this round.

Ques.  When will the second stage of IES 2020 be held?

Ans. IES Main 2020 is scheduled for June 28, 2020.

Ques.  What is the exam pattern of the IES Main examination?

Ans. IES Main 2020 will be conducted in offline mode. The second stage will also consist of two paper, both will contain conventional type questions of 300 marks each. Candidates will be given 180 minutes to solve each paper. The questions will be from the selected Engineering discipline.

Ques.  What is the marking scheme for IES Main?

Ans. Different questions will carry different marks. There is no negative marking for the wrong answer in IES Main Paper. However, 5% of marks will be deducted in case of illegible handwriting. Marks obtained in this stage are counted for determining the final order of merit.

Ques.  What is the syllabus for the Mains stage?

Ans. The syllabus for the Main paper will consist of the topics from the selected engineering discipline of the candidate(Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Electrical/Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering).

Ques.  When will the result of IES 2020 Main will be released?

Ans. The date of release of the result for IES Main 2020 Results will be notified by the commission after the conduction of the examination.

Ques.  What is the cutoff for IES Main 2020?

Ans. The minimum marks required to qualify for IES Main are set to 20% i.e. 120 marks out of 600 for General and reserved categories candidates.

Ques.  How are the cutoff marks for IES 2020 decided?

Ans. UPSC decides IES cut off for preliminary exams in two stages, minimum qualifying score needed to be shortlisted and the score of the last qualified candidate selected.

Ques.  How will I get called for the Personality Test?

Ans. If you qualify the cutoff set up by the commission you will be notified for the personality test(personal interview) through email, you will then have to download your Call letter and report for the interview along with all the essential documents as mentioned in the call letter.

Ques.  When will IES Stage 3 be held?

Ans. IES 2020 Personal Interview is expected to be conducted in September 2020.

Ques.  What is the importance of Personality tests in IES 2020?

Ans. A maximum of 200 marks is allotted to the personality test (interview test). The final IES 2020 result will be declared after preparing a merit list based on candidates' performance in all the three stages of IES 2020.

Ans. Approximately 495 candidates will be recruited in the various departments after the conclusion of IES 2020.

What is the difference between the SSC JE and the IES exams?

Hi Arushi. SSC JE has lesser opportunity of getting promoted when compared to the IES Officer. JE are recruited for the executions of the policies made by IES officer whereas IES heads the engineering divisions in future & prepares a decision making authority in the central government engineering divisions.

Hi Koyena. No, railways don’t appoint its officers from Indian Engineering Services (IES) from 2020 onwards. Railways has withdrawn its indent from UPSC to recruit its officers through this exam.

Hi Arushi. UPSC takes several exams including \Civil Service, Engineering Service, Economic Service, NDA, CDA & so on. UPSC calls IES as Indian Engineering Service. And simultaneously, it also stands for Indian Economic Service. So, to avoid confusion UPSC changed the name of Indian Engineering Service, IES to Engineering Service Examination, ESE.

Hi Puja. Yes, you can give the IES exam with B. Tech in Production Engineering (as UPSC requires degree in engineering), But you have to select among these streams EE, ME, CE, ECE as UPSC conducts ESE for these streams only.
