The Union Public Service Commission released UPSC ESE Notification 2027 on Sept 16, 2026, under Exam Notice No. 02/2027-ENGG. The recruitment is being conducted for 480 vacancies across Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering disciplines for various Group A and Group B engineering services. The online application process started on September 16, 2026, and eligible candidates can submit their applications until October 6, 2026. IES Application Process 2027
UPSC IES 2027 application process has started on Sept 16, 2026. Eligible candidates can apply online through the UPSC website until October 6, 2026. Candidates must enter the required details, upload documents, pay the application fee, and submit the form before the deadline. The steps to apply are given below:
Step 1: Go to UPSC’s official website and register yourself in the One Time Registration (OTR) portal by providing your mobile number and email.
Step 2: After OTP submission, fill in the personal details, ID Proof and other details to submit and generate your profile and Unique Registration Number.
Step 3: Login again with the credentials and select the UPSC IES 2027 Application link from the exam dashboard.
Step 4: Fill in the details such as Social Category Profile, Disability Profile, Address, Educational Profile etc.
Step 5: Proceed to pay the application fee online. Check the table below for the application fee details:

What is UPSC IES?
UPSC IES exam is conducted once a year to recruit engineers for Group A and Group B Gazetted posts in Central Government departments. It is conducted in stages of Preliminary exam, Mains exam, and a Personality test. Recruitment is done for the streams of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

IES 2027 Notification
UPSC ESE 2027 Notification has been released on the official UPSC website on Sept 16, 2026. The notification contains important details regarding vacancies, eligibility criteria, application process, selection process, exam dates, exam pattern, syllabus, and other recruitment guidelines. The online registration process has also started from September 16, 2026, and candidates can submit their applications until October 6, 2026. As per the UPSC exam calendar, ESE 2027 Prelims Exam is scheduled to be conducted on January 31, 2027.
IES Vacancy 2027
UPSC has announced 480 vacancies through the Engineering Services Exam (ESE) 2027 for various engineering services and posts. The vacancies are available across four engineering disciplines: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication. IES Eligibility Criteria 2027
UPSC IES 2027 Eligibility criteria are based on factors of Nationality, Age Limit, and Educational qualification. Candidates failing to meet the parameters will be disqualified.
IES 2027 Nationality Criteria
UPSC IES Nationality criteria include candidates with the following nationality:
- Citizen of India
- Subjects of Nepal/Bhutan ( Certificate of eligibility must be issued by the Government of India).
- Persons of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, Vietnam) with the intention of permanent settlement in India ( Certificate of eligibility must be issued by the Government of India).
IES 2027 Educational Qualification
IES Educational qualification requires candidates to possess any of the following:
- A degree in Engineering from a University listed under the Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions listed under the Act of Parliament.
- Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers
- Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from a foreign University/ Institution/ College ( recognised in India)
- Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers
- Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India
- Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics & Radio Engineers, London, held after November 1959
Apart from the above qualifications, candidates applying for the following posts can have the respective mentioned qualifications:
Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engg. Posts): M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.
Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group A: M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a subject or Master’s Degree in Science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject.
IES 2027 Age Limit
IES Age limit requires candidates to be between 21 and 30 years as of January 1, 2027. The upper age limit is relaxable for the following categories:

The following PwD Candidates have an upper age relaxation of 10 years:
- Low vision,
- deaf and Hard of Hearing,
- Locomotor Disability, including Leprosy cured,
- Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims,
- Muscular Dystrophy,
- Specific Learning Disability and Mental Illness.
Note: The above relaxation is applicable only if the candidate holds a permanent post or retains a lien on a permanent post. Candidates in temporary service regularly for at least 3 years are also eligible.
IES Application Process 2027
UPSC IES 2027 application process is expected to begin on September 16, 2027, along with the release of the official notification. Candidates will be able to apply online through the official UPSC website. The steps to complete the IES 2027 application process are given below:

IES Admit Card 2027
UPSC IES 2027 Admit Card will be released by the Union Public Service Commission on its official website before the Engineering Services Exam. Candidates will be able to download the admit card online using their login credentials. Candidates can follow the steps given below to download the UPSC IES 2027 Admit Card.
Step 1: Go to UPSC’s official website and click the ‘Admit Cards’ link.
Step 2: Under the admit cards section, select ‘Engineering Services (Mains) Examination, 2027’
Step 3: After agreeing to the instructions, opt to download through Registration ID or Roll Number.
Step 4: Enter the credentials and submit to view the admit card. Download it to your device and carry the hard copy on the day of the exam.
IES Exam Pattern 2027
IES 2027 Prelims Exam consists of 2 papers with a total of 500 marks. Paper 1 deals with General Studies and Engineering aptitude, while Paper 2 deals with discipline-specific matters. IES 2027 Mains Exam consists of 2 papers with a total of 600 marks.

IES Syllabus 2027
IES 2027 Prelims Syllabus consists of 2 papers. Paper 1 deals with General Studies and engineering aptitude and contains the following topics:
- Engineering-relevant national and international current issues
- Logical reasoning, analytical ability, data interpretation
- Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis.
- General Principles of Design and Drawing
- Production, construction and maintenance.
- Basics of Energy
- Project Management.
- Material Science and Engineering.
- ICT
- Ethics and values in the Engineering profession.
Paper 1 is common for all streams while Paper 2 is discipline-specific for the 4 streams.

IES 2027 Selection Process
IES Selection Process happens in 3 stages. Eligible candidates applying for the exam undergo the following 3 stages:
- Prelims exam
- Mains exam
- Interview
Candidates qualifying the Prelims exam will be shortlisted for the Mains. While Prelim is of an objective type, the Mains exam is descriptive in nature. Candidates qualifying the mains exam will be shortlisted for the Interview which will be marked out of 200. It is conducted to evaluate skills such as leadership, practical applications of engineering, ability to take responsibility, etc.
Candidates qualifying the interview stage are subjected to medical examination in a UPSC-authorised government hospital. The Final Merit list is prepared based on the aggregate marks of all 3 stages.

IES 2027 Answer Key will be released shortly after the completion of the entire exam cycle. Candidates can follow the steps below to download the answer key:

Step 2: Select the ‘Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination 2025 – Answer Key’ option to view the answer key.
Step 3: Download the Paper 1 and Paper 2 answer keys of your respective subject codes to calculate your score.

IES 2027 FAQs
Ques: Can a candidate opt for multiple streams for IES?
Ans: Candidates can select one of the four disciplines for IES exam during the application process. Selection of multiple streams is not allowed.
Ques: Should candidates apply for Prelims and Mains together?
Ans: Yes, candidates should apply for both Prelims and Mains in a single application. Those qualifying the Prelims are automatically eligible for the Mains and are required to fill only a DAF before the Mains.
Ques: How many attempts are there for IES?
Ans: Candidates can try unlimited attempts for IES until they qualify. This must be within the age limit.
Ques: Does IES Mains have negative marking?
Ans: IES Mains does not have negative marking as it is of descriptive type. IES Prelims exam, however, has negative marking.
Ques: Is the syllabus for Prelims and Mains the same?
Ans: The subjects for IES Prelims and Mains are almost the same. The key difference is that the contents of the General Paper of Prelims are excluded from the Mains. All the questions are subject-specific and technical.

Ans: Yes, candidates applying for IES can apply for other UPSC exams if they qualify their respective eligibility criteria.

Ans: Yes, Prelims marks along with the Mains and Interview marks are counted for the final ranking.
