Who gave the slogan “DO OR DIE” and when ?
Gandhiji during Quit India Movement
“Do or Die” was Gandhi’s call during the Quit India Movement — option 3.
The occasion. On 8 August 1942 the All India Congress Committee met at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay and passed the Quit India Resolution. Gandhi’s speech that night contained the famous words :
“Karo ya maro — Do or Die. We shall either free India or die in the attempt; we shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery.”
The next morning, 9 August, the entire Congress leadership was arrested and the movement passed to the people, becoming the most spontaneous and widespread uprising of the freedom struggle.
| Slogan | Who gave it |
|---|---|
| Do or Die (Karo ya Maro) | Mahatma Gandhi, 1942 |
| Quit India | Coined by Yusuf Meherally, adopted for the 1942 movement |
| Give me blood and I will give you freedom | Subhas Chandra Bose, to the Indian National Army |
| Jai Hind | Popularised by Subhas Chandra Bose |
| Swaraj is my birthright | Bal Gangadhar Tilak |
| Inquilab Zindabad | Popularised by Bhagat Singh, coined by Hasrat Mohani |
Why the other options fail. Subhas Chandra Bose had left India in January 1941 and was abroad throughout the Quit India Movement, organising the Azad Hind Fauj in South-East Asia; his own call to sacrifice was a different phrase altogether. The Non-Cooperation Movement of 1920-22 was led by Gandhi, not by Nehru, and produced no such slogan. Since exactly one option is right, option 4 also fails.
What followed. With the leaders in jail, the movement was carried on by students, peasants and underground workers — Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia among them — and parallel governments were set up at Satara, Ballia and Tamluk. In Bihar the movement was exceptionally intense, with railway lines and police stations attacked across the province.
Hence, the answer is Gandhiji during Quit India Movement.
