Which type of natural vegetation covers the largest geographical area in India?
Tropical Deciduous vegetation
Natural vegetation in India is classified largely on the basis of the amount of rainfall a region receives.
Tropical Deciduous forests, also called monsoon forests, grow in areas receiving roughly 70 to 200 cm of annual rainfall. Since a very large part of India falls within this moderate rainfall belt, these forests are the most widespread natural vegetation type in the country and cover the largest geographical area.
These trees (such as teak, sal, sandalwood and bamboo) shed their leaves in the dry season to conserve water, which gives them the name deciduous.
The other types are far more restricted: mountain vegetation is confined to the Himalayan and hill belts, tidal mangrove vegetation is limited to deltas and coastal wetlands like the Sundarbans, and dry tropical thorn vegetation is found only in the semi-arid and arid regions of the northwest and interior peninsula.
Hence, the vegetation covering the largest area in India is Tropical Deciduous vegetation.
